If you’re in crisis and someone tells you to “toughen up” or “get over it” or “grow a spine,” punch them in the dick (even if they’re technically a chick).
Here’s a list of our favorite resources to turn to when you’re stuck. We’ll add more as we can – or take some out if they prove to be problematic. And, no, we will not be sharing proselytizing sources.
Crisis Hotlines for USians
For the Suicide Prevention hotline, call 1-800-273-8255 or text TALK to 741-741. They speak English and Spanish.
If you’re a military veteran, press 1 from 1-800-273-8255 or text 838255.
For LGBTQ+ youth, the Trevor Project is here for you at 1-866-488-7386.
For dating abuse, especially for younger folks, there’s LoveIsRespect.Org. Call: 1.866.331.9474, TTY: 1.866.331.8453, Text: loveis to 1.866.331.9474, and you can reach them also En Espanol.
For rape and sexual assault, call the National Sexual Assault Online Hotline at 1-800-656-4673. This should be after you call 911, of course, for what that’s worth. (I know, it’s a crap shoot whether anything will come out of it these days, but at least make sure there’s a call on record.)
For all kinds of other crises, there’s the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. It’s kind of the US government’s clearinghouse of resources for all kinds of problems and issues, from natural disaster trauma to addiction issues to mental illness treatment.
